Programme profile

This programme can only be taken as a Joint Honours programme, with the UCD Arts structure.

Mathematics plays a key role in our quest to fully describe and understand the natural world. Those who concentrate on Mathematics will gain an understanding of mathematical concepts and learn how to prove key facts and solve problems using deductive reasoning. As well as providing you with the opportunity to study Mathematics, we also give you the chance to combine the study of Mathematics with that of Statistics. Students who focus on Statistics will explore how statistical techniques can be used to make sense of data in diverse application areas. Statistics is a key tool for anyone wanting to specialise in the social sciences and students on the Arts programme might consider combining their study of Statistics with other related subjects in the BA.

Programme content

Some of the Stage 1 modules build on the foundations laid at school but you will also meet new and exciting aspects of the subject. It is not assumed that you have met everything before and each topic is carefully introduced and built upon. You can add Statistics to the modules you take in Mathematics at Stage 1 and then decide whether to continue with Mathematics alone or combine your study of Mathematics with Statistics.
